The original Rainbow Pride Flag was created in 1978 by American artist and LGBTQ+ activist Gilbert Baker at the request of politician and activist Harvey Milk. The original design featured eight colours, each with its own meaning. Over time, the design evolved into the familiar six-colour version, making it easier and more cost-effective to produce while retaining its powerful message of Pride and unity.
The six colours of today’s Rainbow Pride Flag each have their own meaning:
