The Bisexual Pride Flag was created in 1998 by Michael Page, who wanted a recognisable symbol that would increase the visibility of bisexual people within the wider LGBTQ+ community. Unveiled on 5 December 1998, the flag quickly became one of the most widely recognised Pride flags and continues to be displayed at Pride events, community gatherings and celebrations around the world.
The colours of the Bisexual Pride Flag each have their own meaning:
- Pink – Represents attraction to the same gender.
- Purple – Represents attraction to more than one gender and the overlap between same and different gender attraction.
- Blue – Represents attraction to a different gender.
Michael Page explained that the purple band blends into both the pink and blue sections, symbolising how bisexual people often exist between or across traditional understandings of sexual orientation while remaining an important and visible part of the LGBTQ+ community.
